Historically, quiltmaking has been dismissed as a fine art form because it is primarily practiced by women who have been ignored and left out of art historical texts. These artists are still overlooked and undervalued in the current art market. Using quilts as both a medium and a subject, I am inserting myself as an artist and as a woman into this history with the intention of disrupting it.
My design of the "NO" patchwork is rooted in conversations about consent and the socialization that causes such difficulty for many women to say NO to almost anything. I started making the patchworks after the 2016 election of Donald Trump; equating the political strong-arming that is now happening to nonconsensual acts of aggression. This piece is part of an ongoing series.
